There might be situations where an outfit needs someone right now and if you have taken your written test than they could train you, get you tested and put on the road. They will also have several weeks of training out on the local roadways. Make sure they will give you the necessary training to get ALL of your endorsements including hazmat, tankers, doubles and triples, and people (buses). Make sure you get ALL of these. It only requires a very short written test and can also severely limit your job opportunities if you leave them out. The best place you could be on a freeway is where there are no cars immediately ahead of you and no cars to either side and no one that you can see in your correctly-adjusted rear and side view mirrors. The Truck driving schools will always tell you that you will have no problem getting hired after you achieve your CDL. This in fact, is true to a certain point, but what they don't tell you is the key factor you need to know BEFORE you enter into a Truck driving school . You have finally made it through school, and now have been hired with a company. You report to the company for orientation which will last for up to 5 days, and most company's will only give you maybe $25.00 per day for this. Some company's won't even do this. Of course the feed you lunch, and put you in a cheap motel, and provide you with a van to take you to the terminal and back to the motel. If you are running early make sure to ask about delivering early. Wasting your drive time at a truck stop because you're early may be relaxing now, but when you consider what it may be costing you, you may reconsider. The sooner your empty, the sooner your on the road again.
